Artist's Statement

Doreen Koch Allen

Art, for me, is both meditation and movement — a dialogue between imagination, intuition, and emotion. My paintings are expressions of energy and spirit, infused with vibrant color and the joy of discovery. Working primarily in watercolor and acrylics, I blend spontaneity with intention, often layering mixed media and pastel to create luminous depth and rhythm.

Nature is my constant muse — its forms, patterns, and quiet details are a language I translate through paint. Whether it’s the shimmer of light on water, the wild architecture of branches, or the shifting moods of the Pacific Northwest landscape, I’m drawn to the ways color and texture can mirror our inner worlds. Music often accompanies my process, guiding each piece toward a mood or melody that feels alive.

My work balances playfulness and precision. I allow the paint to flow freely, then respond to what appears — a dance of letting go and refining, of curiosity and control. Each painting becomes a moment of connection, an invitation for the viewer to pause and feel something familiar yet new.

As a largely self-taught artist, my journey has been one of continual experimentation and growth. Art has always been my way of exploring what’s beneath the surface — of finding wonder in the ordinary and beauty in imperfection. Through color, texture, and intuition, I aim to capture not just what I see, but what I feel.
